From aspiring news anchor to global star: the career trajectory of Claudia Kim
In short: Before she was a fixture in Hollywood blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Claudia Kim pursued a vastly different path. Driven by a childhood dream of becoming a television anchor, she spent her formative years preparing for a career in journalism, only to find her true calling in front of the camera.
Born Kim Soo-hyun on 25 January 1985, the actress spent six years of her early life living in the United States. This international exposure fueled her academic ambitions; during her middle and high school years, she set her sights on becoming an international lawyer or a broadcast journalist. Inspired by CNN anchor Karuna Shinsho, she enrolled at Ewha Womans University as an International Studies major. Her commitment to journalism was substantial, as she spent three years reporting for the school's English-language paper, Ewha Voice, and completed internships at Arirang TV and The Korea Times.
Her transition into entertainment was unexpected. In 2005, she entered a Korea-China modeling contest and secured the top prize, despite having no prior professional modeling experience. This victory caught the attention of producer Oh Se-kang, who spotted her on a morning talk show. This led to her 2006 acting debut in the drama Queen of the Game, where she earned the New Star award at the SBS Awards for Acting. Her early career included roles in the medical drama Brain and the sitcom Standby, before she achieved international recognition with her performance in the series Marco Polo and the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Beyond her filmography, which includes portraying Nagini in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and appearing in the historical drama Gyeongseong Creature, Kim has been a notable figure in industry advocacy. In 2019, she became the first Korean actress to attend the Women in Film Gala, an event supported by Max Mara that promotes gender equality in entertainment. Her career has continued to evolve, marked by shifts in agency representation—joining YG Entertainment in 2021 and Saram Entertainment in 2025—and a recent turn hosting the 30th Busan International Film Festival in September 2025.
