From bulk wine to beer giant: the evolution of Constellation Brands
In short: Starting as a small regional wine seller in 1945, Constellation Brands transformed into a Fortune 500 powerhouse. Today, it dominates the US beer import market while navigating complex global supply chains, high-stakes legal battles, and a notable pivot into the cannabis industry. Its history is a masterclass in aggressive corporate expansion.
Founded by Marvin Sands in 1945 as Canandaigua Industries, the company originally focused on selling bulk wine in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It grew through decades of strategic acquisitions, including the 2004 purchase of Robert Mondavi Corp. for $1 billion and the 2006 acquisition of Vincor International for $1.44 billion. By 2000, the company rebranded as Constellation Brands to better reflect its expanding portfolio of spirits, wine, and beer.
The company's most significant shift occurred in 2013, when it acquired the US beer business of Grupo Modelo from Anheuser-Busch InBev. This deal granted Constellation perpetual rights to import and market Corona and Modelo Especial in the United States. To support this, the company operates breweries in Nava and Ciudad Obregón, Mexico. A planned third brewery in Mexicali was abandoned due to environmental concerns, leading the company to shift its development to Veracruz.
Constellation has also faced significant legal and operational challenges. In 2010, it was convicted by a French court for selling fraudulent pinot noir, and in 2018, it faced a water rights dispute in Mexico. Furthermore, its 2017 entry into the cannabis market via Canopy Growth—marking the first such investment by a Fortune 500 company—has seen a recent reversal, with the company reducing its stake and signaling a potential exit from cannabis-infused beverages since 2023.
Today, Constellation maintains a 7.4 percent market share among major beer suppliers. Its headquarters recently relocated to a 170,000 square foot campus in Rochester, New York, marking a return to the city for a Fortune 500 firm after a two-decade absence. The company continues to balance its core beer business with a refined portfolio of premium wines and spirits, constantly adjusting its strategy through divestments and new ventures.
