The chaotic, lo-fi legacy of Crystal Castles and its dark dissolution
In short: Once celebrated for their abrasive, glitchy electronic sound and high-energy live shows, the Canadian duo Crystal Castles became the center of a harrowing scandal. What began as a musical partnership in Toronto transformed into a public battleground of allegations involving systemic abuse and control.
Formed in 2005 by producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass, Crystal Castles built a reputation on 'lo-fi melancholic' productions and chaotic performances. Their early work, such as the 2006 release 'Alice Practice', featured intentionally grating sounds designed by Kath to be 'the most annoying sounds ever.' The band's aesthetic was even reflected in their name, which they pulled from a line in the cartoon She-Rob: Princess of Power.
The group's ascent included significant milestones, such as their debut album reaching number 39 on NME's 'Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade' and a successful second album that charted in the UK, US, and Australia. However, the band's trajectory was fundamentally altered by the interpersonal dynamics between its founders. In October 2014, Glass announced her departure, and while Edith Frances eventually joined the group, the band's stability was short-lived.
In 2017, the musical narrative was eclipsed by serious allegations. Glass publicly accused Kath of sexual, physical, and mental abuse during their time in the band. She detailed controlling behaviors, including Kath withholding her passport and managing her finances. Further allegations emerged involving the use of drugs and alcohol to coerce young women. While Kath denied the claims as 'pure fiction,' the fallout led to the cancellation of tour dates, the departure of their longtime manager, and a police investigation into Kath by the Toronto Police Service. The band has remained inactive since these events.
