In short: Rising from the suburbs of Philadelphia in 1983, Cinderella captured the MTV era with high-energy glam metal. Yet, beneath the hair-rock aesthetic lay a musical depth that would eventually shift the band toward a gritty, blues-based sound, earning them a place among the era's most illustrious acts.

Formed in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, by Tom Keifer and Eric Brittingham, Cinderella emerged during the mid-1980s explosion of glam metal. Their debut album, Night Songs, released in August 1986, became a massive success, reaching number 3 on the Billboard charts by February 1987 and eventually achieving triple platinum status. At its peak, the album was selling approximately 50,000 copies per week.

While they were often categorized alongside other hair metal acts, critics noted that Cinderella possessed a 'meatier' sound than many of their contemporaries. This musical complexity was evident as the band transitioned from their initial glam metal style toward a blues rock-influenced sound in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a shift highlighted by their 1988 album, Long Cold Winter.

The band's trajectory was marked by both massive commercial achievement and significant personal struggle. They have sold an estimated 15 million records worldwide, but their momentum was disrupted by Keifer's vocal cord issues in 1991 and subsequent industry shifts. Despite various reunions and tours, including a 25th-anniversary world tour in 2011, the band eventually became inactive following their 2014 performances. In 2017, Keifer confirmed that internal issues between members had become irreparable, effectively ending the group's future plans.

The band's legacy remains tied to the MTV era, having achieved heavy rotation through hit singles and high-profile tours supporting artists like Bon Jovi and David Lee Roth. Even as their fame declined in the mid-1990s, their influence as a premier glam metal act persisted, with VH1 describing them as Philadelphia's most illustrious contribution to the genre.
