From the Taco Bell Chihuahua to Reno's finest, the voice of a thousand characters.
In short: Carlos Alazraqui is a master of vocal transformation, moving seamlessly from the iconic Taco Bell chihuahua to the bumbling Deputy James Garcia in Reno 911!. Beyond his live-action fame, he has built a prolific career as a voice actor, defining the childhoods of generations through legendary animated roles.
Born in Yonkers in 1962, Carlos Alazraqui began his journey into performance while attending California State University, Sacramento. It was during his college years that he first stepped into the world of stand-up comedy, eventually winning the San Francisco Comedy Competition in 1993, where he outperformed contemporaries like Marc Maron and Patton Oswalt. This early success provided the momentum to move to Los Angeles and launch a career that would span decades across television, film, and radio.
Alazraqui’s vocal versatility is widely recognized by industry peers. Jeff Marsh, a storyboard writer for Rocko's Modern Life, noted that while Alazraqui’s natural speaking voice is devoid of any accent, his ability to adopt and maintain diverse personas—from a Scottish-accented guardian dog to bilingual tools—is exceptional. This talent made him a staple of 1990s and 2000s animation, lending his voice to characters in Rocko's Modern Life, The Fairly OddParents, and the original Spyro the Dragon. His work has earned him significant industry recognition, including an Annie Award win in 2017 for his performance in The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show.
While his voice work is extensive, Alazraqui is perhaps best known to live-action audiences for his role as Deputy James Garcia in the comedy series Reno 911!. He portrayed the character across five original seasons and returned for various revivals, including the 2022 film Reno 911! Defunded. His career remains remarkably varied, encompassing everything from radio contributions on The Stephanie Miller Show to noir parody podcasts like The Case of the Greater Gatsby. Today, his legacy continues through his family, with his daughter Rylee also establishing herself as a voice actor in her own right.
