Davey Boy Smith: The British Bulldog who conquered the American wrestling ring
In short: Before he was a global icon, Davey Boy Smith was a young wrestler from Golborne navigating the brutal world of professional combat. From his early days in the Stampede Wrestling dungeon to headlining Wembley Stadium, Smith became a defining figure in wrestling history, leaving a legacy that spanned three decades.
Born in 1962, David Smith began his training at age 13 under Ted Betley. His career took flight after he was scouted by Bruce Hart, leading him to Canada to train in the legendary Stampede Wrestling dungeon. By 1982, he had captured the Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship, setting the stage for his international rise. Alongside his cousin, the Dynamite Kid, he formed The British Bulldogs, a tag team that would eventually dominate the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) landscape during the 1980s.
Smith’s career was defined by his immense popularity in the United Kingdom, which reached a fever pitch at SummerSlam 1992. In front of 80,355 fans at Wembley Stadium, he defeated Bret Hart to win the Intercontinental Championship. This event remains a hallmark of his career, showcasing his ability to draw massive crowds. Despite never holding a world championship, he headlined major pay-per-view events for both the WWF and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), proving his status as a premier attraction.
His journey was not without turbulence. He faced significant personal and professional challenges, including a serious 1989 automobile accident that required 135 stitches, and a 1992 release from the WWF amid investigations into steroid distribution. Yet, Smith’s resilience kept him in the spotlight. Whether as a beloved hero or a calculated villain, he remained a central figure in the industry until his death in 2002. His contributions were formally recognized in 2020 with his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
