The first time professional wrestling conquered the continent of Europe
In short: In 1992, a massive shift occurred in the landscape of sports entertainment. For the first time, an American promotion took its biggest summer spectacle across the Atlantic to London, tapping into a booming UK market and creating a historic milestone for the industry.
The 1992 SummerSlam marked a pivotal expansion for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). While the event was originally intended for the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, officials pivoted to London's Wembley Stadium to capitalize on a surging popularity of wrestling in the United Kingdom. This move was supported by years of groundwork, including 'American special' broadcasts starting in 1987 and successful national tours beginning in 1991. By August 29, 1992, the UK market was at a peak boom, with WWF remaining one of Sky TV's highest-rated programs.
The event drew an attendance of 78,927 (though the company claimed a disputed figure of 80,355), making it the highest-attended wrestling event in Europe to date. The production generated over $3,650,000 in revenue from ticket sales and merchandise. Because of the international shift, several storylines were adjusted; notably, 'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith was chosen to win the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship specifically because he was a native of northern England.
The card featured intense personal drama and high-stakes rivalries. The match between Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith—who were brothers-in-law in real life—was highlighted by family tension involving his sister, Diana Hart. Meanwhile, the main event saw Ultimate Warrior face 'Macho Man' Randy Savage in a rivalry that had been rekindled after the Warrior's return at WrestleMania VIII. Despite the international scope, the event maintained its status as one of the 'Big Four' pillars of the promotion's annual calendar.
The undercard showcased diverse styles, from the face-slapping antics of Shawn Michaels and Rick Martel—who were bound by a stipulation not to hit each other in the face—to the powerhouse moves of The Legion of Doom. These matches collectively solidified SummerSlam as the second biggest event of the year, trailing only WrestleMania.
