In short: Born into a lineage of ministers, David Rasche traded the pulpit for the stage and screen. After honing his craft in Chicago's improvisational comedy scene, he became a fixture of American television, evolving from a satirical 1980s police inspector into a master of portraying complex, authoritative figures in modern prestige drama.

Born in St. Louis in 1944, David Rasche's early life was steeped in religious tradition. As the son of a minister and farmer, he initially followed a conventional path, graduating from Elmhurst College in 1966 and attending the University of Chicago Divinity School. However, he eventually pivoted toward the arts, earning a graduate degree in English and studying acting under the legendary Sanford Meisner. His early professional years were defined by diverse roles as a writer, teacher, and performer with Chicago's Second City, as well as helping to fund the Victory Gardens Theater.

Rasche's transition to screen acting began in the late 1970s, with notable early appearances in Paul Mazursky's An Unmarried Woman and Woody Allen's Manhattan. He achieved widespread recognition in the mid-1980s as the star of the satirical sitcom Sledge Hammer!, where he played a violent, chauvinistic, and clumsy police inspector. This role cemented his reputation for comedy, though he simultaneously built a serious theatrical career, starring in David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago and the Broadway production of Speed-the-Plow. His range allowed him to move seamlessly between genres, from playing a KGB agent in Miami Vice to portraying Donald Greene in the 2006 film United 93.

In his later career, Rasche became a familiar face in high-profile television dramas and political satires. He portrayed a US official in the 2009 film In the Loop and served as a main cast member in HBO's Succession from 2018 to 2023, playing Karl Muller. Beyond his screen work, Rasche has maintained a connection to the stage, performing in Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth in 2017. Today, he balances his professional life in New York and California with his wife, Heather Lupton, with whom he has three children, continuing a career that spans over four decades of American performance history.
