Developed by Canadian studio Behaviour Interactive, Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric multiplayer survival horror game. Since its original 2016 release on Windows via Steam, the title has grown into a massive commercial success, attracting more than 70 million players. The core gameplay revolves around 'trials,' where the killer's goal is to impale survivors on hooks to satisfy a dark force known as the Entity, while survivors attempt to repair five of seven generators to power the exit gates.
The mechanics of the chase are central to the experience. Survivors can use wooden pallets to stun the killer or use items like flashlights to temporarily blind them. However, the killer possesses a 'terror radius'—a zone where survivors hear an intensifying heartbeat—and a 'red stain' that indicates the killer's facing direction. If a survivor is caught, they enter a vulnerable state where they must resist the Entity through skill checks while being carried to a hook.
The game's longevity is fueled by deep customization and diverse content. Players can equip up to four perks to gain special abilities, such as self-healing or sabotaging hooks. Through the 'Bloodweb' skill tree, players can advance characters to prestige 100, unlocking higher tiers of unique perks. The game has also expanded through various crossovers, including themes like Castlevania, Resident Evil, and The Witcher, as well as alternative game modes like the 2v8 mode and 'Chaos Shuffle'.
