In short: Born in East Germany to American parents, Christoph Nord’s life is defined by betrayal and transformation. Once a soldier for West Germany's Cell Six, he became a premier mercenary known as Maverick, before being forcibly upgraded by the Weapon X program into the silent, corrosive killer known as Agent Zero.

The character of David North, also known as Maverick or Agent Zero, was created by writer John Byrne and artist Jim Lee, making his first appearance in X-Men #5 in February 1992. Originally known as Christoph Nord, his early life was shaped by the Cold War. While fighting for the West German black ops unit Cell Six, he suffered a devastating personal betrayal when his wife, Ginetta Barsalini, was revealed to be a spy. The resulting incident, which led to her death, left North a cold and distrusting man.

North's mutant abilities center on kinetic energy absorption. He can absorb the impact of falls, energy blasts, or superhuman strikes with little to no harm, and can channel that energy into superhumanly powerful physical attacks. His history is deeply intertwined with the Weapon X program and the clandestine Team X, where he served alongside Logan (Wolverine) and Victor Creed (Sabretooth) during the 1960s. During this era, North's biology was manipulated; he received a healing factor derived from Logan's DNA, a procedure that also left him with false memory implants.

His transformation into Agent Zero marked a darker chapter. Following a near-fatal encounter with Sabretooth, North was recruited by Malcolm Colcord into Weapon X. This process granted him a vibranium suit that renders him silent and invisible in darkness, alongside a specialized corrosive enzyme. This enzyme is designed to counteract the healing capabilities of other mutants, making an opponent's injuries worse as their body attempts to mend them. Despite these enhancements, North's powers were eventually lost following the events of M-Day caused by the Scarlet Witch.
