The motorcycle is more than a vehicle in this post-apocalyptic Oregon
In short: In the desolate landscapes of Bend Studio's first open-world project, survival depends on a single machine. As an outlaw-turned-drifter, Deacon St. John must navigate a world overrun by Freakers, where his motorcycle serves as his primary lifeline, requiring constant fuel and repairs to keep him moving through the wilderness.
Set two years after a pandemic transformed millions into mindless, zombie-like creatures known as Freakers, Days Gone follows Deacon St. John through the diverse terrain of central Oregon. The narrative, inspired by works like World War Z and Sons of Anarchy, centers on Deacon's quest to find his wife, Sarah, whom he believed was lost during the initial outbreak. As players explore this open world, they must manage resources like fuel and scrap to maintain Deacon's motorcycle, which acts as the character's main mode of transportation.
The gameplay mechanics emphasize survival and tactical combat against various threats. Beyond the massive hordes of Freakers, players encounter Newts—infected adolescents who act as opportunistic hunters—and infected wildlife such as Runners and Ragers. To survive, Deacon utilizes a wide array of tools, including firearms, melee weapons, traps, and improvised explosives like molotov cocktails. Players can also employ stealth tactics or use noise suppressors to avoid attracting unwanted attention from hostile enemies.
While the game received mixed reviews regarding its mission design and technical performance, it was praised for its graphics and the performance of Sam Witwer. The story concludes with a complex revelation involving NERO, the National Emergency Response Organization, and the true nature of the virus. Despite a failed pitch for a sequel in 2021, the franchise continues to see interest, with a film adaptation currently in development.
The game's development was a significant undertaking for Bend Studio, marking their first original property since Syphon Filter in 1999. The production lasted approximately six years, beginning in early 2015, during which the studio's team expanded nearly three-fold, growing from about 50 to 130 members. After being declared gold on March 10, 2019, the title was released for PlayStation 4 in April 2019, eventually reaching Windows players in May 2021.
