The dramatic demographic shift of a nation once defined by rapid growth
In short: In the late 20th century, Iran’s population surged, but a new trend is emerging. Today, birth rates are hitting historic lows, driven by shifting economic realities and changing cultural values. Is this a temporary dip or a permanent transformation of the Iranian family?
For decades, Iran experienced an explosive demographic expansion. Between 1990 and 2008, the population grew by 32%, adding 17.6 million people. This momentum was even more pronounced in the decade between 1976 and 1986, when the nation saw an average annual growth rate of nearly 4%. By 2016, the population had reached approximately 80 million, a fourfold increase from the 1956 census.
However, the trajectory has since shifted toward contraction. By 2021, the fertility rate had fallen to 1.6, notably below the 2.1 replacement level. In 2026, the country recorded its lowest birth rate in roughly seven decades. This decline is driven by both micro and macro factors, including education, economics, and shifting cultural values. Research from the Australian National University suggests that many women now view large families as a financial pressure or an obstacle to their personal interests.
The consequences of this decline are significant. As fertility levels drop, the population growth rate slowed to 1.2% between 2011 and 2016. While the population is projected to continue growing until it stabilizes above 100 million by 2050, the aging trend poses risks to the national economy. In response, policymakers have attempted to mitigate these factors by restricting access to certain contraceptives and fertility-reducing surgeries.
Parallel to these shifts, Iran has undergone massive urbanization. In 1950, only 27% of the population lived in cities; by 2015, that figure had climbed to approximately 73.4%, making it one of the steepest urban growth rates globally.
