Can a century-old youth organization shape the leaders of tomorrow through ancient Masonic ideals?
In short: Founded in 1919, DeMolay International is a global leadership program for young men aged 12 to 21. By emphasizing seven cardinal virtues and a strict ethical code, the organization aims to cultivate responsible citizens and capable leaders, all while maintaining deep historical ties to the traditions of the Knights Templar.
DeMolay International traces its origins to Kansas City, Missouri, where it was established in 1919 by Frank S. Land. Named after Jacques de Molay, the final Grand Master of the Knights Templar, the organization was designed to foster personal development in young men. Today, it operates across every continent except Antarctica, supporting approximately 12,000 active members. While the group is not open to young women, it maintains a unique culture where chapters may elect female representatives, such as sweethearts, princesses, and duchesses, to serve as ambassadors and support local activities.
The core of the DeMolay experience is built upon seven cardinal virtues: filial love, reverence for sacred things, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanliness, and patriotism. These ideals are reinforced by an ethical code that mandates loyalty to friends, support for public education, and a commitment to law-abiding behavior. The organization’s emblem features a crown with 10 rubies, originally pearls, which commemorate the founder and the nine original members who started the movement in Kansas City. As each founding member passed away, their corresponding pearl was replaced with a ruby.
Governance within DeMolay is structured to mirror adult leadership roles. Local chapters are led by a Master Councilor, who is elected by his peers and supported by an advisory council of adult Masons. On a broader scale, the International Supreme Council oversees global operations, while the DeMolay Congress functions as a legislative body where delegates from various jurisdictions meet annually. This hierarchical system has attracted high-profile support, with U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, Gerald R. Ford, and Franklin D. Roosevelt all serving as honorary leaders. Ultimately, the organization’s mission is encapsulated in its motto, which asserts that no member should fall short in their duties as a citizen, a leader, or a man.
