In short: The United Arab Emirates has undergone a massive demographic transformation driven by rapid economic growth. Today, the country is home to a vast, diverse workforce where expatriates represent the overwhelming majority, creating a unique social landscape shaped by South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Western influences.

The demographic profile of the United Arab Emirates is defined by an unprecedented influx of international workers. Driven by significant economic expansion, the total population surged from 4 million in 2004 to approximately 11.35 million by 2024. This rapid growth has resulted in a society where foreigners make up 88.50% of the inhabitants, the third-highest proportion of expatriates globally, trailing only Qatar and the Vatican.

This massive migrant workforce creates a distinct gender imbalance. Because many foreign workers are men, females—both citizens and non-citizens—account for only 36.20% of the total population. This imbalance is reflected in the national gender split, with males comprising 63.80% of the population as of 2024. Consequently, the majority of the population, roughly 64.12%, falls within the 25 to 54 age bracket, a demographic trend heavily influenced by the expatriate labor force.

Cultural and linguistic diversity is a cornerstone of this modern era. While Arabic is the official language and the primary medium of instruction in government schools, English serves as the dominant language for business and technical education. The sheer scale of immigration has necessitated multilingualism in public services; for example, Abu Dhabi recognized Hindi as its third official court language in 2019, and the government now provides driving tests in several languages, including Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Bengali.

The population is not evenly distributed across the landscape. It is heavily concentrated in the northeast on the Musandam Peninsula, with nearly 83% of all residents living within the three largest Emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. This concentration, alongside a record population density of 114 per square kilometer in 2024, highlights the intense urbanization characterizing the region's development.
