In short: With nearly half its population under the age of 15, Yemen stands as a country defined by its youth. From its mountainous northern tribal strongholds to its urban centers, this Arab nation is undergoing significant demographic shifts, balancing ancient social structures against the pressures of modern migration and rapid population growth.

Yemen’s demographic landscape is characterized by intense growth and a youthful profile. In 1950, the population stood at 4.3 million; by 2021, estimates placed it at approximately 33 million. Projections suggest this figure could reach 60 million by 2050. This expansion is driven by high fertility rates, which were recorded at 6.5 children per woman in 2007. Currently, 46% of the population is under 15 years old, while only 2.7% are aged 65 or older.

The country remains a largely tribal society, particularly in the northern mountainous regions where some 400 Zaidi tribes reside. While the population is predominantly Arab, it maintains a complex religious fabric. The Muslim population is split between Sunni followers—primarily of the Shafi'i school—and Shia groups, which include Zaidis, Twelvers, and Ismailis. Historically, Yemen hosted diverse minority groups, though many departed following the establishment of the former North and South Yemen states.

Beyond its borders, a significant Yemeni diaspora exists, with tens of thousands living in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy. Meanwhile, the country itself has seen shifting migration patterns, including the arrival of refugees from Iraq, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Syria. Despite recent improvements in life expectancy, which reached an average of 62.5 years by 2007, the nation continues to face challenges in public health, evidenced by infant mortality rates that remain high compared to global standards.
