From Hydroponics to Hollywood: The Unlikely Rise of Viral Moralist Dhar Mann
In short: Dhar Mann built a digital empire on morality plays, racking up billions of views with short, didactic videos. Yet, his path to becoming a social media mogul was paved with failed ventures, a criminal conviction for real estate fraud, and high-profile disputes over his studio's working conditions and pay.
Born in 1984 to parents who operated a taxi service and real estate business in Oakland, California, Dhar Mann spent his early career navigating a series of entrepreneurial ventures. By his twenties, he had launched multiple companies, including a luxury car rental service and a mortgage refinancing firm. In 2010, he co-founded weGrow, a retailer selling hydroponic equipment for medical marijuana. The venture ended in controversy when his partner, Derek Peterson, sued him, alleging the business was a 'hydroponzi scheme'—a claim Mann’s representatives denied, citing retaliation for downsizing the partnership.
Mann’s legal troubles deepened in 2012 when he was charged with thirteen felony counts of fraud related to a city beautification program he operated through his company, MannEdge Properties. He eventually pled no contest to five felony counts in 2013, receiving five years of probation and a fine. Though this conviction was later expunged, it marked a turbulent period before his pivot to digital media. In 2018, he founded Dhar Mann Studios, shifting from motivational content to the morality plays that would define his brand.
By 2025, the studio had grown into a massive operation in Burbank, California, employing 200 staff and collaborating with 2,000 actors annually. His videos, often compared to 1950s educational films or 1980s after-school specials, have garnered over 11 billion views. Despite this success, the studio has faced scrutiny; in 2023, actors publicly protested, alleging poor working conditions and low pay. Mann disputed these claims, maintaining that the studio’s operations were fair. Today, his influence extends beyond YouTube, with partnerships at Fox Entertainment, Disney, and Samsung, and a role as the NFL's 'Chief Kindness Officer' for Super Bowl LX in 2026.
