The world's seventh largest economy is a melodic death metal virtual band
In short: Dethklok is not just a parodic death metal act from the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse. They are a global cultural force so massive they are ranked as the world's seventh largest economy. From massive tours to complex internal hierarchies, this virtual band's influence is as heavy as their music.
Created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, Dethklok is a satirical melodic death metal band featured in the animated series Metalocalypse. While the music heard in the show is performed by Small and others, the band's influence is depicted as immense. By the end of the show's second season, Dethklok's commercial success and lucrative sponsorships had elevated them to the status of the world's seventh largest economy.
The band's members—frontman Nathan Explosion, guitarist Skwisgaar Skwigelf, guitarist Toki Wartooth, drummer Pickles, and bassist William Murderface—are portrayed with extreme contradictions. Despite their staggering wealth and the fact that they reside in a high-altitude castle called Mordhaus, they are often depicted as incompetent at basic life tasks like grocery shopping or cooking. They are supported by a personal organization of servants known as Klokateers, who serve as roadies, security, and a private military squadron.
The band's musical output has seen significant real-world milestones. Their debut album, The Dethalbum, was released on September 25, 2007, and reached number 21 on Billboard's Top 200. After a long hiatus, they returned in August 2023 with their fourth album, Dethalbum IV, and a USA tour featuring co-headliners Babymetal. Their success is so profound that an Illuminati-style council known as The Tribunal monitors them, describing the band as the 'world's greatest cultural force.'
The band's live performances are notoriously hazardous, often held in dangerous locations featuring aircraft, lasers, and giant bladed pendulums. These shows are so extreme that they frequently result in multiple attendee deaths, a testament to the band's overwhelming and often destructive cultural impact.
