From a Bronx bartender to a Hollywood fixture: the career of Desmond Harrington
In short: Desmond Harrington transitioned from working as a waiter and bartender in New York City to becoming a recognizable face in television and film. Best known for his role as Joey Quinn on Dexter, his career spans diverse genres, ranging from psychological thrillers and horror films to historical dramas and crime series.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1976 and raised in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, Harrington’s path to acting was unconventional. After attending Fordham Preparatory School and briefly enrolling at Manhattan College, he left after six weeks to pursue acting classes at the HB Studio in Greenwich Village. His professional breakthrough arrived in 1999 when he was selected from 350 candidates to portray Jean d'Aulon in Luc Besson's The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.
Harrington quickly established a presence in the horror and thriller genres during the early 2000s, appearing in films such as The Hole, Ghost Ship, and the slasher movie Wrong Turn. His performance in the dark comedy Love Object, where he played an isolated man obsessed with a sex doll, earned him the Best Actor award at the Málaga Fantastic Film Festival. Simultaneously, he expanded his range in television, notably appearing as an alien abductee in the Steven Spielberg-produced miniseries Taken.
His television career gained significant momentum with his role as the detective Joey Quinn on Showtime's Dexter, a part he played from 2008 to 2013 and returned to for Dexter: Resurrection in 2025. During his tenure on Dexter, he also balanced a recurring role as the antagonist Jack Bass on Gossip Girl. Harrington has since taken on varied roles, including the historical figure Alan Shepard in The Astronaut Wives Club, a serial killer in Elementary, and FBI director Louis Freeh in Manhunt. His film work also includes a pivotal appearance in Christopher Nolan's 2012 blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.
