How a short story became a short-lived CBS workplace comedy
In short: Before it was a television series, DMV was a short story by Katherine Heiny. The comedy, which follows the chaotic staff of the East Hollywood DMV, attempted to turn the frustrations of renewing a license into prime-time entertainment, but its journey from pilot to cancellation was remarkably brief.
Created by Dana Klein, the series premiered on CBS on October 13, 2025. This series explores professional difficulties and personal relationships among staff members working at the California Department of Motor Vehicles' East Hollywood office. Central to the narrative is Colette, a driving instructor played by Harriet Dyer, who struggles with professional boundaries and harbors a crush on a new employee named Noa. The ensemble includes Tony Cavalero as Vic, a former bouncer and gym enthusiast, and Molly Kearney as Barbara, an optimistic branch manager. Other cast members include Gigi Zumbado as Ceci and Alex Tarrant as Noa.
The production had a complex timeline. Following a pilot order on August 5, 2024, the series was picked up for a full season of 20 episodes in April 2025. While filming took place in Montreal, Canada, starting in July 2025, the show's lifespan was limited. Despite its premise, the series was canceled by CBS in March 2026, just months before its series finale aired on May 11, 2026. The project was executive produced by several individuals, including Aaron Kaplan and Wendi Trilling. It was originally filmed in Montreal, Canada, under the direction of Trent O'Donnell.
Critical reception was varied. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series maintained a 65% approval rating from 17 reviews, with critics noting it was more enjoyable than visiting a real DMV. Conversely, Metacritic offered a milder critique, assigning a 53/100 rating from 11 reviewers and labeling the production as mixed or average. In the United Kingdom, the show was broadcast on ITV1 and made available on the ITVX streaming service. It was subtitled as DMV: Department of Motor Vehicles for British audiences.
