The Israeli-designed Hermes 900 is a versatile drone reshaping global aerial surveillance and defense
In short: From tracking flood victims in Brazil to patrolling Arctic waters, the Hermes 900 has evolved from a tactical military asset into a multi-role powerhouse. While its combat record is marked by both operational successes and high-profile losses, its ability to integrate into civilian airspace makes it a unique global player.
The Elbit Systems Hermes 900, known in Israel as the Kochav or Star, is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and communications relay. With a wingspan of 15 meters and an endurance exceeding 30 hours, it serves as a successor to the widely used Hermes 450. Its payload versatility is significant, supporting sensors ranging from electro-optical and infrared to synthetic-aperture radar and electronic warfare suites.
The platform's operational history is complex. It debuted during Israel's 2014 Operation Protective Edge, performing missions that exceeded the capabilities of its predecessor. Since then, it has been deployed globally, from the Philippines and Chile to Azerbaijan and Thailand. However, the system faces challenges in high-intensity conflict environments; multiple units have been shot down in Lebanon and Iran during 2024 and 2025. These losses highlight the vulnerability of even advanced unmanned systems to modern surface-to-air defenses.
Beyond combat, the Hermes 900 is carving a niche in civilian and humanitarian roles. Switzerland, for instance, adapted the platform to meet rigorous civil certification standards, aiming to integrate it into dense civilian airspace using a 'Detect-and-Avoid' system. Similarly, Canada and Brazil have utilized the drone for maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, and search-and-rescue operations. These civilian applications demonstrate the platform's adaptability, though projects like the Swiss ADS-15 and the Indian Drishti-10 Starliner variant show that integrating such sophisticated technology into diverse regulatory and operational environments often involves significant technical and logistical hurdles.
