From regional startup to Delta subsidiary: the turbulent history of Endeavor Air
In short: Founded in 1985 as Express Airlines I, this regional carrier has navigated decades of restructuring, bankruptcy, and rebranding. Now a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, it operates as Endeavor Air, managing a complex network of regional flights while grappling with internal labor tensions and significant operational challenges.
The airline began as Express Airlines I in 1985, founded by Michael J. Brady to serve as a regional partner for major carriers. Its early growth was tied to Republic Airlines, which sought to offload shorter routes to smaller aircraft like the Jetstream 31. Following Northwest Airlines' acquisition of Republic in 1986, the carrier rebranded as Northwest Airlink. By 1997, Northwest had purchased the company outright, consolidating its operations around a Memphis hub and introducing the Bombardier CRJ to its fleet.
The early 2000s brought significant instability. In 2002, the company was renamed Pinnacle Airlines and formed a new holding corporation. Despite acquiring other carriers like Mesaba and Colgan, the company faced severe financial strain, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2012. This era marked a transition toward operating 50-seat and 76-seat regional jets exclusively for Delta Connection.
Operational history has been marked by both expansion and tragedy. The airline has faced multiple fatal accidents, including the 1993 crash of a Northwest Airlink flight in Minnesota and the 2004 crash of a Pinnacle flight in Missouri, both attributed to crew coordination and operational errors. More recently, the airline has dealt with a series of ground collisions at major hubs like JFK and LaGuardia. Beyond safety, the company faces internal pressure; in 2024, flight attendants picketed to highlight a 45% pay gap compared to Delta mainline staff, with many employees reporting reliance on public assistance despite the parent company's record profits.
