The man who bypassed death to become a celestial scribe

In short: In the ancient genealogies of Genesis, one figure stands apart. While other patriarchs lived for centuries only to succumb to age, Enoch vanished from the earth without ever experiencing a mortal end, leaving behind a legacy of cosmic secrets and divine transformation.

Enoch, the son of Jared and father of Methodeuselah, occupies a unique position in biblical history. According to the Book of Genesis, he lived for 365 years before being 'taken' by God. Unlike his contemporaries, who were recorded as dying at ages exceeding 700, Enoch is described as having 'walked with God' and simply ceased to be, a phenomenon the Epistle to the Hebrews interprets as being translated so he would not see death.

The traditions surrounding him are vast and often esoteric. Some Jewish and Christian texts attribute the 'Book of Enoch' to him, a work that explores his ascent to heaven and his role as a guardian of celestial treasures. In certain mystical traditions, such as the Kabbalah, he is identified as Metatron, an archangel who communicates God's word. Other much later traditions, including the LDS Church, suggest he founded the righteous city of Zion and was taken from the earth alongside his people.

The interpretation of his departure has shifted through the ages. While the Septuagint translators used terms suggesting a movement from one place to another, later scholars like Rashi offered a more somber view, suggesting God took Enoch early to prevent him from being swayed toward evil. Whether viewed as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox tradition or a prophet identified as Idris in Islam, Enoch remains a central figure in the study of ancient apocalyptic literature and the origins of sacred mysteries.
