In short: Every process on your computer runs within a specific environment, defined by a collection of user-settable variables. These simple string-based key-value pairs act as a hidden communication channel, allowing programs to discover file paths, user preferences, and system settings without needing hardcoded instructions for every unique machine configuration.

At their core, environment variables function as an associative array of strings. When a process starts, it typically inherits a duplicate of its parent's environment. This inheritance mechanism allows for a consistent configuration flow from the system startup scripts down to individual user applications. While Unix systems introduced this modern form in 1979 with Version 7 Unix, Microsoft operating systems adopted the feature starting with PC DOS 2.0 in 1982.

The behavior of these variables is defined by the operating system's rules regarding scope and syntax. In Unix-like environments, variable names are case-sensitive and are typically retrieved by prefixing the name with a dollar sign. Conversely, Windows, DOS, and OS/2 treat these names as case-insensitive and use percent signs to wrap the variable name. Despite these differences, the fundamental principle remains: variables are local to the process. Changing a value in one shell does not affect other running processes, ensuring that configuration leaks are minimized.

Security is a critical consideration, particularly regarding setuid programs in Unix. Because these programs run with different authority than their caller, they are vulnerable to manipulation via environment variables like LD_PRELOAD. To prevent attackers from forcing the execution of arbitrary code, the system's dynamic linker automatically unsets these sensitive variables at startup. This defensive measure highlights the power of environment variables: they are not just passive data, but active instructions that can fundamentally alter how a program executes and interacts with the system's authority.
