In short: Before becoming a titan of children's literature, Eoin Colfer was washing bottles at Loftus Hall. Today, his fantasy worlds have sold millions of copies and inspired major film adaptations, proving that a background in education and a love for theatre can lead to literary immortality.

Born in Wexford, Ireland, on 14 May 1965, Eoin Colfer’s path to literary fame was shaped by a childhood spent in the shadow of theatre and diverse travels. Following his Education degree from the University of Dublin, he taught at a primary school and toured Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Tunisia. These experiences, alongside his Irish heritage, provided the foundational texture for many of his early narratives.

In 2001, Colfer gained global fame after his debut Artemis Fowl novel reached the New York Times Best Seller list. This series, which includes eleven books, has become one of the best-selling series of all time, with more than 21 million copies sold worldwide as of 2013. The series' massive reach is further evidenced by its translation into 44 languages. His influence extends beyond prose; he has contributed to graphic novels and was even commissioned to expand Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series with the 2009 publication of And Another Thing ...

His versatility is notable, spanning from children's literature to Marvel Comics, where he released Iron Man: The Gauntlet in 2016. He also served as Ireland's Children's Laureate (Laureate na nÓg) between 2014 and 2016. While his work has seen various adaptations, including an Artemis Fowl film that debuted on Disney+ on 12 June 2020, his literary output remains his most enduring legacy, with more than half of his books reaching the New York Times bestseller list at least once.
