The European Free Alliance unites regionalist and separatist movements across the continent
In short: The European Free Alliance is a political coalition representing stateless peoples, minority groups, and regionalists seeking greater autonomy or independence. While often leaning left, this diverse alliance navigates the complex landscape of European governance, advocating for subsidiarity and the protection of cultural and linguistic diversity within the European Union.
Formed in 1981 by six regionalist parties and three observers, the European Free Alliance (EFA) has evolved into a registered European political party. Its core mission is to promote a Europe of regions, emphasizing the principle of subsidiarity—the idea that decisions should be made at the most local level possible. The alliance envisions a continent where stateless peoples and regions possess a stronger voice, potentially participating directly in the Council of the European Union when their specific competencies are at stake.
The EFA’s internal structure is managed by a General Assembly, a Bureau, and a Secretariat. Membership is selective, generally limited to one party per region, and requires a year of observer status before full integration. While the EFA traditionally aligns with centre-left and left-wing ideologies, its membership has historically included a variety of regionalist perspectives, ranging from the Scottish National Party to the New Flemish Alliance. These parties often seek to balance their regional goals with broader European integration, though ideological shifts have occasionally led members to defect to other parliamentary groups.
Since 1999, the EFA has maintained a significant partnership with the European Green Party, forming the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament. This collaboration allows regionalist voices to influence EU policy, despite the inherent challenges of representing diverse, often separatist, agendas. The alliance also supports its intellectual mission through the Coppieters Foundation, established in 2007, which serves as its official think tank. Today, the EFA continues to navigate the tension between national sovereignty and the European project, advocating for a decentralized structure that respects the unique cultural and linguistic identities of Europe’s many regions.
