A new coalition is reshaping the landscape of the European political left
In short: Born from a 2024 schism, a fresh alliance of green-leaning parties is challenging traditional structures. By distancing itself from communist roots and prioritizing eco-socialist and feminist agendas, this group seeks to redefine left-wing mobilization across the continent, sparking intense debate about the future of European political unity.
The European Left Alliance (ELA) emerged in 2024 as a distinct political entity, formed by parties previously connected through the Now the People platform. The movement was catalyzed by the Danish Red-Green Alliance's decision to split from the Party of the European Left. This shift reflects broader tensions within the European left, mirroring the internal divisions seen in Germany between the socially liberal Die Linke and the socially conservative BSW. The ELA was formally registered as a European political party on 27 September 2024.
The alliance explicitly positions itself as a green, feminist, and anti-racist force, aiming to move beyond what it views as the outdated influence of traditional communist parties. By excluding these groups, the ELA seeks to broaden its electoral appeal. Its membership includes parties like La France Insoumise, the Swedish Left Party, and Spain's Podemos. While these parties operate within the broader GUE/NGL parliamentary group in the European Parliament, their formation has drawn criticism from factions within Die Linke, who argue that fragmenting the left during the rise of the extreme right is a strategic error.
Beyond electoral politics, the ELA has established a foundation called For the People, led by figures such as Li Andersson and Clémence Guetté. The alliance is also actively pursuing transnational activism, notably launching a European Citizens' Initiative in January 2026. This initiative calls for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing human rights concerns in Gaza. With 20 of the 46 MEPs in the Left group now associated with ELA member parties, the alliance is positioning itself as a significant, albeit controversial, voice in European policy, focusing on anti-capitalist and anti-war mobilization.
