In short: Originally conceived as a single film based on a charity textbook, the Fantastic Beasts series expanded into a planned five-part epic. Despite grossing over US$1.8 billion, the franchise now sits in an indefinite state of suspension, leaving the future of Newt Scamander and his magical creatures uncertain on the big screen.

The Fantastic Beasts series emerged from J. K. Rowling’s 2001 textbook, written to support the charity Comic Relief. In 2013, Warner Bros. announced plans to adapt this material into a film series, marking Rowling’s screenwriting debut. The project aimed to explore the Wizarding World decades before the events of the Harry Potter books, specifically covering the years 1926 to 1945. The narrative follows Newt Scamander, a magizoologist, as he navigates a growing conflict involving Albus Dumbledore and the antagonist Gellert Grindelwald.

Production was a complex, multi-year endeavor led by David Heyman. The first film, released in 2016, was a commercial success, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of that year and earning the franchise its first Academy Award for Best Costume Design. However, the series faced significant turbulence. The role of Grindelwald saw three different actors—Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, and Mads Mikkelsen—across the three films. Additionally, production schedules were repeatedly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced delays and safety adjustments during the filming of the third installment, The Secrets of Dumbledore.

While Rowling initially envisioned a five-film arc, the series stalled after the third entry. By 2022, reports indicated that Warner Bros. Discovery had no active development on further Wizarding World films. Director David Yates later described the series as being parked, and lead actor Eddie Redmayne has suggested that his time as Newt Scamander has likely concluded. With the studio shifting its focus toward a Harry Potter television series, the ambitious prequel saga remains incomplete, existing now primarily through its three films, published screenplays, and various theme park integrations.
