How a magical creature’s precognition shaped the fate of the Wizarding World’s leadership
In short: In the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts series, the election of a new leader for the International Confederation of Wizards hinges on the qilin, a rare creature capable of seeing into the soul. As dark forces attempt to manipulate this ancient tradition, the stakes for the Muggle world skyrocket.
The Secrets of Dumbledore, released in 2022, serves as the third entry in the Fantastic Beasts series. Directed by David Yates, the narrative centers on Albus Dumbledore’s efforts to thwart the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Because of a blood pact formed during their youth, Dumbledore and Grindelwald are magically prevented from dueling one another, forcing Dumbledore to assemble a team led by magizoologist Newt Scamander to intervene in Grindelwald’s political ascent.
Central to the plot is the qilin, a magical beast with psychic abilities. Grindelwald attempts to seize power by killing a newborn qilin and reanimating it to falsely bow to him during the election for the Supreme Head of the International Confederation of Wizards. However, the survival of a second qilin, rescued by Newt, provides a path to exposing Grindelwald’s deception. The creature ultimately bows to Vicência Santos, who is then elected as the legitimate leader.
The production of the film faced significant hurdles, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the high-profile replacement of Johnny Depp with Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald. Despite its $407 million global box office performance, the film remains the lowest-grossing entry in the Wizarding World franchise. It concludes with the breaking of the blood pact between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, setting the stage for their inevitable confrontation while resolving the mystery of Credence Barebone, who is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Albus’s brother, Aberforth.
