In short: Founded in 1918, FC Dnipro evolved from a factory team into a Soviet champion and a European finalist. Yet, despite its storied history and a modern stadium, the club faced a rapid decline, ultimately dissolving in 2019 due to mounting legal battles and unpaid debts to its staff.

The club began as BRIT in 1918, serving the Petrovsky factory in Katerynoslav. Over the decades, it underwent numerous rebrandings—including Stal, Metalurh, and eventually Dnipro—while operating under the sponsorship of the Yuzhmash rocket plant. By the 1980s, under coaches like Volodymyr Yemets and Yevhen Kucherevsky, the team reached its peak, securing Soviet Top League titles in 1983 and 1988. It also became the Soviet Union's first professional football club in 1989.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the club transitioned into the Ukrainian Premier League. Its modern era was defined by high-profile investments from Ihor Kolomoyskyi and the construction of the 31,003-capacity Dnipro Arena, which opened in 2008. The club's greatest international achievement occurred in 2015 when it reached the UEFA Europa League Final. During that campaign, the team was forced to host home matches in Kyiv, roughly 400 kilometers from their home city, because of the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The downfall began shortly thereafter. In 2016, UEFA banned the club from European competition for violating financial regulations. Financial instability worsened as owner Ihor Kolomoyskyi reduced funding, leading to significant point deductions and relegation. By 2018, FIFA mandated further relegation due to unpaid compensation for players and managers. The club played its final season in the 2018–19 Ukrainian Amateur League before ceasing operations. Attempts to link the newer SC Dnipro-1 as a legal successor for debt recovery purposes were dismissed by FIFA in 2021.
