In short: Formed in 1993 by former Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Richard Patrick, Filter became a staple of industrial rock. While the band achieved platinum success with its debut, it is defined by a constant state of flux, with Patrick remaining the only consistent member across its long, turbulent history.

Filter emerged from Cleveland in 1993, founded by Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang. Their debut, Short Bus (1995), bridged the gap between grunge melodies and the cold, rhythmic pulse of industrial music. The single Hey Man Nice Shot became a massive hit, though it was shadowed by rumors linking it to the public suicide of R. Budd Dwyer, a connection the band consistently denied.

The band's trajectory was marked by frequent personnel changes and Patrick's personal struggles. After the success of their second album, Title of Record (1999), which featured the hit Take a Picture, the band faced a turning point during the tour for their third album, The Amalgamut (2002). Patrick voluntarily entered rehab for drug and alcohol abuse, leading to a hiatus and the departure of his bandmates. He later marked his sobriety with a tattoo of the date September 28, 2002.

Throughout the following decades, Filter functioned as a vehicle for Patrick's evolving musical vision. He explored various sounds, from the politically charged Anthems for the Damned (2008) to the electronic-heavy The Algorithm (2023). Despite the collapse of projects like the intended follow-up to Short Bus, reBus, due to the PledgeMusic bankruptcy in 2019, Patrick has maintained the band's output. His approach has shifted between heavy industrial metal and more melodic, electronic-infused rock, often collaborating with a rotating cast of musicians.

Today, Filter remains a testament to the endurance of a singular creative force. With over 30 years of history, the project has navigated the rise and fall of industrial rock trends, maintaining a core identity while constantly reinventing its sonic palette. As of 2026, Patrick continues to work on new material, including the upcoming ninth studio album, The Antidote, proving that the band's only true constant is its capacity for reinvention.
