How a doomed football stadium became the set for a high-stakes action thriller
In short: When West Ham United prepared to vacate their historic Boleyn Ground, producers saw a rare opportunity. They transformed the soon-to-be-demolished stadium into the backdrop for Final Score, a 2018 action film that pits a former soldier against mercenaries in a race to prevent a catastrophic explosion during a match.
The concept for Final Score emerged from a casual discussion between Signature Entertainment's Marc Goldberg and West Ham co-owner David Sullivan. Recognizing the impending demolition of the Boleyn Ground, Goldberg sought to capitalize on the venue's unique availability. He partnered with producer Wayne Marc Godfrey, who brought on director Scott Mann. The team quickly solicited script treatments, eventually selecting a submission from the Lynch brothers that was pitched as a Die Hard-style thriller set within a stadium.
Production was a logistical feat, with principal photography commencing in August 2016. The crew repurposed the stadium's former executive suites into living quarters, allowing director Scott Mann to reside on-site during the shoot. The film features a cast led by Dave Bautista and Pierce Brosnan, supported by a mix of professional actors and sports media figures. To maintain the film's gritty aesthetic, the production relied on practical stunts, including a motorcycle chase through the stadium, while Bournemouth-based Outpost VFX handled the digital effects.
Upon its 2018 release, the film drew inevitable comparisons to other hostage-in-a-stadium movies, particularly the 1995 feature Sudden Death. While director Scott Mann acknowledged the thematic parallels, he maintained he had not viewed the earlier film during production. Critics offered a divided reception; some praised the film's wit and physical performances, while others found the narrative tropes overly familiar. Despite the mixed critical response, the project stands as a unique cinematic record of the Boleyn Ground, capturing the stadium shortly before its permanent closure and redevelopment into a residential complex.
