In short: Vladimir John Ondrasik III, known as Five for Fighting, adopted his moniker at the request of EMI executives who found his real name difficult to pronounce. The name refers to a five-minute major penalty in ice hockey, reflecting the singer's lifelong passion for the Los Angeles Kings.

Born in 1965, Ondrasik began his career in the glam metal scene, playing in a band called John Scott before shifting his focus back to the piano. In 1995, he signed with EMI and adopted the Five for Fighting name, a choice the label favored despite its resemblance to a heavy-metal band. His debut album, Message for Albert, was released in 1997, but the project stalled when EMI's American division closed shortly thereafter.

Ondrasik achieved his major breakthrough with the 2000 album America Town. The single 'Superman (It's Not Easy)' became a cultural touchstone following the September 11 attacks, earning a Grammy nomination in 2002. His follow-up, The Battle for Everything, solidified his success, reaching Platinum status and producing the hit '100 Years', which topped the Adult Contemporary charts for 12 non-consecutive weeks. Critics often noted his blend of romanticism and a harder rock edge, sometimes comparing his work to artists like Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.

By the 2010s, as his commercial peak faded, Ondrasik pivoted toward television and social commentary. He placed songs in numerous series, including Hawaii Five-0 and Code Black, and began using his platform to address geopolitical issues. In the 2020s, he released tracks responding to the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Today, with over one billion streams, he continues to perform, recently appearing with a string quartet for a 2025 live EP.
