The hidden hand gesture sparking a massive corporate crackdown in South Korea
In short: A simple pinch of the thumb and index finger has triggered a wave of apologies, boycotts, and professional ruin. What began as an allegation of hidden feminist symbolism in an advertisement has evolved into a powerful tool for online harassment and corporate censorship.
The 'finger pinching' conspiracy theory emerged in South Korea, alleging that radical feminist groups are covertly embedding misandrist messages into mainstream media. Proponents claim that the 'precision grip' gesture—using the thumb and index finger to hold small objects—is a symbolic insult directed at Korean men. This theory draws a direct line to the defunct radical feminist website Megalia, which used a similar handshape in its 2015 logo to mock men.
The controversy gained significant momentum in May 2021 when the convenience store chain GS25 used a hand gesture in a promotional poster. Despite the gesture being a common way to depict holding items like sausages or credit cards, theorists accused the company of promoting Megalia's symbolism. The backlash was intense: the company issued apologies, altered the poster multiple times, and eventually removed it. The movement even prompted a petition to remove GS25 from the Korea Armed Forces, garnering 42,000 signatures in a single day.
The phenomenon has since moved into the video game industry, most notably involving the developer Nexon. In late 2023, Nexon removed trailers for the game MapleStory after allegations that an animation featured the gesture for 0.1 seconds. The fallout was severe: Nexon condemned the animation studio Ppuri, and the studio's president initially promised to fire a female animator under immense pressure. However, subsequent investigations by news media debunked these claims, revealing that the specific frame in question was actually drawn by a male animator in his for\s0ties, and that the gesture was often an unintentional byproduct of natural hand motion.
While the theory is widely regarded as a hoax by scholars and news outlets, it serves as a potent mechanism for online harassment. It has led to doxing, death threats, and the targeting of employees, fueled by a broader social tension in South Korea regarding gender inequality and perceived reverse discrimination.
