Gary Holt: The thrash metal architect who keeps the Exodus legacy alive
In short: As the only member to appear on every Exodus album, Gary Holt is a pillar of thrash metal. Beyond his decades of riff-writing, he transitioned into a permanent role with Slayer, became an ordained minister, and recently published his memoir, all while navigating the physical demands of a lifelong career.
Born in 1964, Gary Wayne Holt emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area to become a defining force in thrash metal. He joined Exodus in 1981, just six months after picking up the guitar, and has served as the band's primary songwriter and most senior member ever since. His influence is so profound that Loudwire has described him as arguably the best pure thrash guitarist in the genre.
Holt’s career expanded significantly in 2011 when he began filling in for Jeff Hanneman in Slayer. Following Hanneman's death in 2013, Holt became a permanent member, contributing guitar solos to the 2015 album Repentless and touring with the band until their 2019 farewell. His technical approach has remained fluid; as he turned 60, he adapted his playing style to manage arthritis and repetitive motion issues. He currently favors ESP guitars and utilizes a mix of Marshall and ENGL amplification to achieve his signature sound.
Beyond the stage, Holt’s life is marked by diverse interests and convictions. He is an ordained minister who officiated a vow renewal for bandmate Tom Araya, an atheist, and a vegan who stopped drinking alcohol in 2021. His political views are equally candid, having publicly criticized various American politicians over the years. In 2025, he released his memoir, A Fabulous Disaster, which chronicles his journey from a music-loving teenager in the Bay Area to a central figure in heavy metal history.
