The massive engine that redefined long-haul flight and broke world records
In short: Before the GE9X, the GE90 was the undisputed heavyweight of the skies. Designed for the Boeing 777, this $2 billion engineering marvel utilized revolutionary carbon fiber blades to deliver unprecedented thrust, eventually helping the 777 outpace its rivals and master the world's longest flight paths.
Launched in 1990 to power the Boeing 777, the GE90 was a massive undertaking. The GE90 represented a completely fresh $2 billion undertaking, whereas the Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce alternatives merely updated previous models. It was designed to provide the immense power required for wide-body, long-range twin-engine jets, a task that required significant technological leaps.
One of its most critical innovations was the use of 22 carbon fiber composite fan blades. These blades, a technology refined from earlier GE36 research, offered double the strength of traditional titanium blades while weighing only one-third as much. This reduction in weight, combined with a strategic reduction in the total number of blades compared to the older CF6 engine, significantly improved aerodynamic efficiency.
The engine's power has been demonstrated through extreme testing. During a stress test in Peebles, Ohio, a GE90-115B development engine reached a record 127,900 lbf of thrust, surpassing its previous Guinness World Record. While the GE9X eventually surpassed this in 2017, the GE90 remains a powerhouse; its -115B variant actually maintains a higher rated thrust of 115,000 lbf than the GE9X.
The engine's impact on aviation was profound. The GE90-115B's performance was a primary reason the Boeing 777's sales exceeded those of the Airbus A340, offering a significant fuel burn advantage. It also achieved a milestone in safety and range, becoming the first configuration to be certified ETOPS 330, allowing flights to operate for up to 330 minutes with a single engine functioning.
