In short: From the massive C-5 Galaxy to the Airbus A330, the General Electric CF6 has been a cornerstone of aviation since 1971. This high-bypass turbofan family has evolved through numerous iterations, powering iconic aircraft like the DC-10 and Boeing 747, while its core drives industrial and marine turbines.

In the late 1960s, the TF39 for the C-5 Galaxy marked the start of the CF6 lineage. GE subsequently launched the CF6, a civilian version with increased thrust, which first flew in 1971 on the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Over decades, the family expanded to include the CF6-50, the CF6-80 series, and various industrial derivatives like the LM5000 and LM6000.

The engine's architecture has undergone significant refinement to meet increasing thrust demands. For example, the CF6-50 achieved higher thrust by increasing core airflow, adding two booster stages to the low-pressure compressor and removing the last two stages of the high-pressure compressor. The CF6-80C2 variant further increased performance by adding an extra stage to the low-pressure compressor and a fifth stage to the low-pressure turbine, resulting in a 93-inch fan diameter.

Despite its widespread success, the series has faced critical safety challenges. Historical incidents include the 1973 disintegration of a CF6-6 fan assembly on National Airlines Flight 27 and the 1989 United Airlines Flight 232 crash, where a CF6-6 fan disk separation damaged all three hydraulic systems. More recently, in November 2025, UPS Airlines Flight 2976 crashed following an engine pylon separation on an MD-11 powered by CF6-80C2D1F engines, leading to the grounding of all MD-11s and DC-10s.

The engine's versatility extends beyond flight. This engine drives the LM2500, LM5000, and LM6000 marine and industrial gas turbines; specifically, the LM6000 produces 40 to 56 MW for industrial, utility, oil, and gas sectors.
