How a serial fabricator manipulated his way into the United States Congress
In short: George Santos secured a seat in the House of Representatives by constructing a completely fictional biography. His rapid ascent and subsequent expulsion reveal the vulnerabilities of political vetting, the power of narrow legislative majorities, and the strange intersection of modern campaign finance, prediction markets, and persistent, high-stakes public deception.
George Santos was elected to represent New York's 3rd congressional district in 2022, but his tenure was defined by the systematic unravelling of his personal history. Before he was even sworn in, investigations revealed that his claims regarding his education, professional background, and financial status were largely fabricated. Despite these revelations, he maintained his seat for nearly a year, bolstered by a narrow four-seat Republican majority that made his vote essential to party leadership.
The mechanism of his deception extended to his business dealings. Santos founded the Devolder Organization, which he claimed managed $80 million in assets and provided him with a substantial salary. In reality, financial disclosures and investigations by the House Ethics Committee painted a different picture: the company had no public presence, minimal revenue, and was used for a series of unexplained cash deposits and withdrawals exceeding $240,000. His campaign finance reports were similarly inconsistent, marked by a wide gap between his stated fundraising and official disclosures.
Santos became the sixth member of the House to be expelled, and the first to be removed without a prior criminal conviction or ties to the Confederacy. His expulsion in December 2023 followed a damning report from the House Ethics Committee. Even after his removal, his pattern of behavior continued; he later pled guilty to identity theft and wire fraud, and was involved in a market manipulation scheme on the prediction platform Kalshi, resulting in a lifetime ban.
His political career was characterized by a refusal to resign despite pressure from members of both parties, including fellow New York Republicans. He viewed his expulsion as a badge of honor, claiming it was a political stunt. His trajectory from an unknown candidate to a national figure—and eventually a convicted fraudster—highlights how easily institutional guardrails can be bypassed when political incentives prioritize party control over rigorous candidate vetting.
