How a PowerPoint presentation helped a young driver secure his Formula One future
In short: George Russell is a rare talent who navigated the brutal economics of junior racing by pitching himself to Mercedes with a slide deck. After years of struggling in back-of-the-grid machinery, his rise from karting prodigy to Grand Prix winner reveals the intense, often hidden, mechanics of professional motorsport.
Born in King's Lynn in 1998, George Russell began karting at seven, eventually winning back-to-back junior European Championships in 2011 and 2012. His ascent was fueled by his father, Steve, who invested roughly £1.5m into his career before the costs of junior formulae—sometimes reaching £800K for a single season—forced Russell to seek external backing. To secure a spot on the Mercedes Junior Team, Russell bypassed traditional scouting by presenting a Microsoft PowerPoint to team leadership, successfully convincing them to fund his 2015 European Formula Three campaign.
Russell’s path to Formula One was defined by a grueling apprenticeship. After winning the 2017 GP3 and 2018 FIA Formula 2 titles as a rookie, he spent three years at Williams. The team was severely underfunded, and Russell famously went 37 races before scoring his first points. Despite the car's limitations, his potential was evident; he outqualified teammate Robert Kubica in every race of 2019 and was ranked the sixth-best driver by team principals in 2020, even while scoring zero points that season.
His breakthrough came in 2020 when he substituted for Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix. Despite leading the race, a pit crew error and a late puncture relegated him to ninth. He eventually joined Mercedes full-time in 2022, securing his maiden win in São Paulo that same year. By the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Russell had accumulated 8 race wins and 12 pole positions, cementing his status as a top-tier competitor in the sport's modern era.
