In short: When a Mach 2 missile skims the sea toward a warship, there is no room for human error. The Goalkeeper CIWS is an autonomous Dutch defense system that detects, tracks, and destroys threats in just 5.5 seconds, using the same massive 30mm cannon found on the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Introduced in 1979, the Goalkeeper Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) was designed by Hollandse Signaalapparaten B.V. to provide ships with a fully automated, last-resort shield. Unlike manual systems, it handles the entire defensive sequence—surveillance, target prioritization, and engagement—without human intervention. At its core sits the GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm seven-barrel rotary cannon, a weapon renowned for its immense destructive power. By firing 30x173mm cartridges, it delivers significantly more projectile mass than the 20mm rounds used by competing systems like the Phalanx, ensuring that incoming missiles are either detonated or completely obliterated rather than merely damaged.

The system relies on a sophisticated dual-radar setup to maintain precision. A 2D I-band search radar scans for threats up to 30 kilometers away, while a secondary tracking radar—operating in both I and K bands—locks onto the target to command real-time adjustments to the line of fire. This dual-band approach is critical for filtering out sea clutter that might otherwise mask low-altitude targets. The system is so fast that it can engage a sea-skimming missile at 1,500 meters and secure a kill by the time the threat reaches 300 meters, a feat proven during rigorous live-fire exercises against target drones and anti-ship missiles.

Despite its age, the Goalkeeper remains a vital asset through continuous modernization. The 'Upkeep Modification' program, initiated in 2012, integrated new electro-optical tracking, high-precision frangible ammunition, and advanced software to counter modern threats like fast-attack craft. Although the upgrade faced budget overruns and development hurdles, the system passed sea acceptance trials in 2018. Today, it continues to serve on various naval vessels, including the De Zeven Provinciën-class frigates, ensuring that the Royal Netherlands Navy maintains its capability to protect crews during high-stakes overseas deployments.
