From a rural Brazilian village to the pinnacle of the UFC
In short: Before he was a world champion, Glover Teixeira worked 12-hour days landscaping in Connecticut. His journey from a community with no electricity to becoming the oldest first-time UFC champion in history is a remarkable testament to persistence and the grit of professional combat sports.
Born in 1979 in the rural community of Sobracia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Teixeira’s early life was defined by scarcity. In his home village, many houses lacked electricity and the area possessed only a single gas station. In 1999, he moved to Danbury, Connecticut, to support his family, taking jobs in landscaping that often required 10 to 12-hour shifts.
His transition into professional fighting was self-driven. After watching legends like Mike Tyson and Royce Gracie, Teixeira began training in boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Connecticut. His talent eventually led him to 'The Pit' in California, where he trained alongside UFC veteran Chuck Liddell. This path eventually saw him become a Brazilian-American citizen in November 2020.
Teixeira’s career was marked by both incredible longevity and significant volatility. He became the second oldest UFC champion in history, behind only Randy Couture, when he secured the Light Heavyweight title at 42 years old via a rear-naked choke against Jan Błachowicz on October 30, 2021. This feat made him the oldest first-time champion the promotion had ever seen.
Despite the physical toll of the sport, Teixeira remained a fixture in the octagon for over a decade. His career included high-stakes battles against icons like Jon Jones and Jiří Procházka, and even involved political advocacy, as he testified before the Connecticut General Assembly in 2013 to support the legalization of regulated MMA in his adopted home state.
