From garbage collector to the greatest no-gi grappler of all time
In short: In 2015, Gordon Ryan quit his job as a garbage collector to focus entirely on grappling. Many view him as the premier no-gi grappler in history, having won numerous world championships in various weight divisions and controlling elite submission wrestling events.
Gordon Ryan, born July 8, 1995, in Monroe, New Jersey, has built a career defined by unprecedented dominance in submission wrestling. He has secured seven ADCC Submission wrestling world championships, three IBJJF No-Gi World titles, and four Eddie Bravo Invitational titles. His career progressed swiftly; following his February 2016 black belt promotion by Garry Tonon, he achieved significant wins, notably defeating Keenan Cornelius in an unlimited-time bout. He began his training journey at age 15 under Miguel Benitez. Later, he transitioned to training with John Danaher, Tom DeBlass, and Garry Tonon.
His technical prowess is evidenced by his ability to win across multiple weight categories. In September 2022, he became the first grappler in ADCC history to win championships in three different weight classes. During that same tournament, he achieved the fastest submission in ADCC history, defeating Roosevelt Sousa via an outside heel hook in just 11 seconds. His dominance extends to superfights, where he has secured victories over notable figures such as André Galvão and Yuri Simões. His competitive history includes winning the IBJJF Pan No-Gi in 2018. He also led Team Alpha Male to victory during the 2018 Quintet tournament.
Despite his success, Ryan's career has faced significant physical and health-related hurdles. He has dealt with a torn LCL from a 2019 injury, a hand injury sustained in a motorized bike accident, and complex digestive issues. Though first identified as gastroparesis, his ailment was actually caused by a Helicobacter Pylori infection, alongside bacterial imbalance and small intestine fungal growth. These health challenges, alongside injuries like rib fractures, have occasionally forced him to withdraw from scheduled competitions. His professional journey includes a seven-figure contract with FloSports. Additionally, he has been involved in several high-profile public disputes with other competitors.
