The grappling prodigy who traded the ground for the striking world
In short: Born into the legendary Gracie dynasty, Kron Gracie achieved elite grappling success before the age of 20. Known as "Ice Cream Kron" for his unflappable composure, he transitioned from a dominant submission specialist to a mixed martial artist, a move that sparked intense debate among his own family members.
Kron Stavik Gracie, born July 11, 1988, in Rio de Janeiro, is a highly decorated submission grappler and mixed martial artist. The son of 9th degree BJJ red belt Rickson Gracie and grandson of Bélio Gracie, he began training as a child. He earned his black belt at 19, having previously secured 51 straight submission victories during elite competitions.
His grappling credentials are extensive. He is a two-time IBJJF World champion and a four-time Pan-American champion. His accolades include winning the 2013 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship in the 77 kg division, where he submitted all opponents, including Garry Tonon, JT Torres, and Otávio Souza. This success earned him a reputation for a calm, composed fighting style.
Gracie's transition to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2014 brought new scrutiny. While he initially found success—winning his debut against Hyung Soo-Kim via armbar—his performance in a 2019 bout against Cub Swanson became a point of contention. Instead of utilizing his superior grappling, he chose to strike, leading his father, Rickson, and uncle, Relson Gracie, to criticize his decision to avoid the ground.
Despite his technical prowess, his MMA career has faced challenges, including a loss to Bryce Mitchell in December 2024 via knockout, marking his first professional stoppage loss. Beyond the cage, Gracie has been a dedicated instructor, though he has also expressed unconventional views, such as his belief in the flat Earth conspiracy theory.
