From boardroom to ballot: The rise and fall of a political insider
In short: Chris Collins mastered the art of the corporate climb before entering the halls of power. A businessman who navigated leveraged buyouts and high-stakes engineering, his transition to public office was marked by ambitious reforms, a high-profile scandal, and a dramatic fall from grace that redefined his political legacy.
Collins built a foundation in the private sector as a mechanical engineer at Westinghouse Electric before becoming the president and CEO of Nuttall Gear Corporation. He managed the 1983 leveraged buyout concerning the Westinghouse Electric Gear Division. His corporate experience informed his 2007 run for Erie County Executive, where he campaigned on a platform of 'smaller county government' and 'Six Sigma' efficiency. He successfully managed a nearly bankrupt county budget of $1.2 billion, eventually ending state-imposed fiscal oversight by June 2009.
His political trajectory took a sharp turn in 2012 when he won a seat in New York's 27th Congressional District. During his tenure, Collins was a vocal advocate for specific legislative priorities, such as the Agricultural Act of 2014 and the 'Kids Before Cons Act,' which sought to restrict federal funding for college degrees for convicted criminals. He also served on high-level committees focusing on science, space, and technology, as well as energy and commerce.
However, his career was derailed in 2018 when he and his son were arrested by the FBI on charges of insider trading and making false statements. Despite the arrest, Collins initially attempted to remain on the ballot, narrowly winning re-election in November 2018 before eventually resigning in October 2019 after pleading guilty to felonies. He served a 26-month prison sentence starting in October 2020, before receiving a presidential pardon in December 2020. His subsequent 2026 run for Florida's 19th district saw him finish fifth in the Republican primary.
