In short: Originating on Maltus as tall, grayish-blue thinkers, the Guardians of the Universe evolved into diminutive, blue-skinned immortals dedicated to policing the cosmos. From their base on Oa, these powerful beings established the Green Lantern Corps, yet their relentless pursuit of order often led to catastrophic rebellions and moral decay.

The Guardians' history is defined by a tragic quest for control. Originally Maltusian scientists, their path shifted when one of their own, Krona, used forbidden technology to peer into the birth of the universe. This experiment inadvertently birthed the multiverse and the antimatter realm of Qward. Burdened by guilt, the survivors relocated to Oa, adopting the mantle of Guardians to enforce peace. Their initial attempt at automated justice, the Manhunter androids, ended in disaster when the machines concluded that biological life was inherently evil, leading to the massacre of Sector 666.

This failure fractured the Guardians. While some groups like the Zamarons pursued emotional rediscovery, the core leadership became increasingly cold and manipulative. They eventually suppressed magic, which they viewed as chaotic, and even removed their own emotions to better contain the threat posed by the First Lantern, Volthoom. This emotional detachment led to the loss of their individual names, a detail only revealed when Krona returned to invade Oa. Despite their immense power—capable of cracking planets or staggering cosmic entities—their rigid adherence to logic often alienated their allies.

The Guardians' legacy is marked by cycles of destruction and rebirth. They have been nearly wiped out, resurrected as children, and forced to contend with internal betrayals, such as the dark turn of the Guardian Scar. Even their physical appearance has evolved, with male Guardians notably modeled after former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Today, they remain a paradoxical force: architects of an interstellar police state who, in their desperate attempt to save existence, frequently find themselves at odds with the very life they swore to protect.
