In short: Long before the modern team of misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy debuted in 1969 as a gritty resistance force. Set in the 31st century, these original heroes fought to liberate a solar system conquered by a reptilian alien race known as the Badoon, establishing a legacy of cosmic rebellion.

Created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Gene Colan, the original Guardians first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes no. 18 in January 1969. The team consisted of four distinct freedom fighters: Charlie-27, a genetically enhanced soldier from a Jupiter colony; Martinex, a crystalline survivor from Pluto; Vance Astro, a 20th-century astronaut who arrived via cryogenic suspension; and Yondu, a humanoid native of Alpha Centauri. Their primary mission was to drive the Badoon, a hostile race of sentient alien reptiles, from their strongholds across the galaxy.

The team’s history is marked by long gaps and creative shifts. After their 1969 debut, they did not reappear until 1974 in Marvel Two-in-One no. 5, where they teamed up with 20th-century heroes like Captain America and the Thing to defend Earth. By 1976, they headlined their own series in Marvel Presents, where they moved away from Earth-bound conflicts to explore the stars. This era introduced new members like Nikki, a human engineered for Mercury’s heat, and Starhawk, an alien entity sharing a body with two siblings. Despite their involvement in significant events like the 1978 'Korvac Saga,' the series struggled with sales and was cancelled in 1977.

The team saw a revival in 1990 under writer and artist Jim Valentino, who returned the group to their 31st-century roots for a 62-issue run. While the modern 2008 iteration—featuring characters like Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon—eventually overshadowed the original, the 1969 team remains a distinct part of Marvel lore. Their timeline, designated Earth-691, eventually diverged from the mainstream Marvel Universe, cementing their status as a separate, enduring saga of space-faring resistance against tyranny.
