In short: Following two consecutive wars, a new team of unlikely heroes emerged to prevent future disasters. Formed from the survivors of the Annihilation: Conquest storyline, this 2008 roster transformed from a reactive group into a proactive interstellar force, changing the landscape of Marvel's cosmic adventures forever.

The 2008 iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy was born from the aftermath of the Phalanx invasion of the Kree. Rather than simply reacting to crises, Star-Lord sought to build a proactive force to protect the galaxy. To achieve this, he recruited a diverse roster including Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, with Mantis providing essential support. This diverse roster was assembled by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The group's formation was specifically motivated by the need to prevent new Annihilation-scale catastrophes.

The team established their base of operations on the space station Knowhere, utilizing its near-universal teleportation system. Security was overseen by Cosmo the Spacedog, an intelligent, telepathic canine. The team's very name was inspired by a meeting with Vance Astro—the Major Victory of the original 1969 Guardians team—which prompted the new group to adopt the mantle.

Their tenure was marked by intense cosmic conflicts, including the War of Kings and the battle against the Cancerverse. These events had profound consequences: the team eventually faced the creation of the Fault, a space-time rift, and the team suffered significant losses, including the death of Drax during the fight against Thanos. Despite these heavy tolls and various reboots, the 2008 team's legacy remains a cornerstone of Marvel's cosmic continuity. The group's involvement in the War of Kings saw them split into three separate units to support the Kree and Shi'ar. Furthermore, the team's struggle against the Cancerverse ultimately resulted in Star-Lord remaining behind in the collapsing universe.
