In short: Since 1992, the Halifax-class frigates have served as the backbone of the Royal Canadian Navy. Originally designed for anti-submarine warfare, these twelve vessels have evolved through massive modernization programs. By integrating international technology and advanced combat systems, Canada is extending their operational life well into the next two decades.

The Halifax-class frigates emerged from the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project, which began in the mid-1970s to replace aging destroyer escorts. These twelve ships, named after major Canadian cities, were built as multi-role warships. While they excel at anti-submarine operations, they were designed to counter surface and air threats simultaneously. Their original design featured a displacement of 4,750 long tons and a CODOG propulsion system, allowing for a top speed of 29 knots.

To keep pace with modern threats, the government launched the Halifax Class Modernization Project in 2007. This effort, which included the Frigate Equipment Life Extension (FELEX) project, saw the ships receive state-of-the-art combat management systems, such as the Lockheed Martin Canada CMS330, and upgraded radar suites like the Thales Smart-S Mk2. These refits, completed in 2016, also increased the crew capacity to 255 and boosted the maximum speed to over 30 knots.

Navigating international restrictions, such as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, forced the Navy to source equipment from a diverse range of global partners, including Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands. Beyond the major refits, ongoing upgrades like the Underwater Warfare Suite Upgrade continue to enhance the ships' sonar capabilities. Although the government has initiated the procurement of new River-class destroyers, the Halifax-class vessels remain vital, with some expected to remain in service through the 2040s.
