How Halo 5: Guardians attempted to redefine a legendary shooter franchise through squad-based mechanics
In short: Released in 2015, Halo 5: Guardians shifted the series toward squad-based combat and larger environments. By introducing Fireteam Osiris alongside Master Chief, 343 Industries aimed to explore the protagonist from new perspectives. The game pushed technical boundaries, demanding 60 frames per second and abandoning local split-screen play for expansive online multiplayer.
Development for Halo 5 began shortly after Halo 4, with 343 Industries setting ambitious goals to utilize the Xbox One's hardware. Creative director Tim Longo and his team sought to move away from the traditional solo-hero paradigm, instead focusing on a hunt for Master Chief across multiple locations. This narrative structure, which alternated between Blue Team and the newly created Fireteam Osiris, was designed to introduce mystery regarding Chief's motivations. The team even considered using existing characters like Fireteam Majestic before settling on a roster that included veteran Edward Buck and intelligence agent Jameson Locke.
Technically, the game was a significant undertaking. To maintain a consistent 60 frames per second, the engine dynamically adjusted resolution during intense scenes, a process that quadrupled the development workload. This performance-first approach necessitated the removal of split-screen and local networking, a departure from previous entries. The art team, led by Nicolas Bouvier, focused on grounding the game's visuals in reality, taking inspiration from the US space program and science fiction films. Every asset was meticulously justified; for instance, a holographic tree replaced a fountain on the mining world of Meridian to better reflect the environment's narrative.
The game introduced Warzone, a 24-player mode that combined competitive combat with computer-controlled enemies and objective-based gameplay. This mode allowed players to summon vehicles and weapons using a requisition system. Beyond the game itself, Microsoft launched an extensive marketing campaign, including the award-winning audio drama Hunt the Truth. While critics praised the gameplay and visuals, the single-player campaign faced divided responses regarding its writing. Despite these criticisms, the title sold five million units within its first three months, cementing its place as a major entry in the Xbox One library.
