How a textile design graduate became a four-time representative for the Bathinda constituency
In short: Born in Delhi in 1966, Harsimrat Kaur Badal transitioned from a background in textile design to a prominent career in Indian politics. Representing the Shiromani Akali Dal, she has secured four consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha, while simultaneously championing social initiatives focused on female empowerment and environmental conservation.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal, born on 25 July 1966, entered the political arena during the 2009 Indian general election. Representing the Bathinda constituency, she secured her first victory by defeating Raninder Singh with a margin of 120,960 votes. Her early parliamentary focus included addressing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a topic she first raised in a speech on 3 December 2009. Her political trajectory continued with re-elections in 2014 and 2019, eventually leading to her appointment as the Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Industries.
Beyond her legislative duties, Badal has been deeply involved in the 'Nanhi Chhan' project, which she launched in September 2008. This initiative operates across various community centers, including schools and religious institutions, to combat female foeticide and promote women's empowerment. Through this program, women and girls in Punjab receive vocational training in skills such as knitting, cloth sewing, and flowering. The project also emphasizes environmental stewardship by encouraging the planting and protection of trees.
Badal's career has not been without significant political shifts. On 17 September 2020, she resigned from her cabinet position in protest against new farm-related legislation. Despite this, she maintained her electoral success, winning a fourth term in the 2024 Lok Sabha election by securing 376,558 votes against Aam Aadmi Party candidate Gurmeet Singh Khuddian. Her family, including her husband Sukhbir Singh Badal and father-in-law Parkash Singh Badal, remains influential in both politics and various business sectors, ranging from transportation and aviation to the media industry.
