Why Hayden Christensen stepped away from Hollywood to build ponds on a farm
In short: After achieving global fame as Anakin Skywalker, Hayden Christensen felt his career was handed to him too easily. Seeking to avoid entitlement, he retreated to an Ontario farm to learn agriculture and manual labor, eventually hand-building his own fishing ponds and plumbing systems while stepping back from the industry spotlight.
Hayden Christensen’s path to stardom was rapid, beginning with Canadian television at age 13. By 2000, he secured the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, beating out roughly 1,500 other candidates. George Lucas selected him specifically for his ability to project the presence of the Dark Side, a requirement essential for the narrative arc of Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader.
Despite the massive scale of the Star Wars franchise, Christensen’s experience was marked by unique creative challenges. Unlike his co-star Ewan McGregor, who could emulate Alec Guinness, Christensen had to bridge the gap between the innocent boy portrayed by Jake Lloyd and the iconic villain established by Sebastian Shaw. During the production of Revenge of the Sith, he requested a custom-engineered Vader suit to fit his own frame, allowing him to reach the character’s 6 ft 6 in height, though his voice was ultimately dubbed by James Earl Jones.
Following the prequel trilogy, Christensen sought to ground himself by purchasing a farm near Uxbridge, Ontario, in 2007. He spent years learning about crops and livestock, viewing the move as a necessary antidote to the feeling that his success was merely a wave he was riding. This hands-on approach extended to his personal projects, including the construction of fishing ponds and complex plumbing systems. While he took a hiatus from major roles, he eventually returned to the Star Wars universe for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, receiving critical reappraisal for his performances.
Christensen’s career has been defined by a mix of high-profile blockbusters and independent projects, such as his critically praised turn as Stephen Glass in Shattered Glass. His legal and entrepreneurial ventures, including the formation of Forest Park Pictures and Glacier Films, demonstrate a desire to maintain agency over his work. Today, his return to the role of Anakin Skywalker is met with a warmth that reflects the public's evolving perspective on the prequel films.
